3 Upland Schools Recognized for Better Nutritional Program by USDA

The USDA has recognized three elementary schools in Upland, California as being “healthier” than other schools.

Three elementary schools in Upland, including Citrus, Baldy View, and Upland, have accepted the challenge to offer healthier meals to their students. The undersecretary of Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services at the Department of Agriculture, Kevin Concannon, says that the Upland school district is the first in the state to adhere to the new, stricter nutritional standards.

Superintendent Nancy Kelly knew the schools needed to improve their nutritional services. That is why two years ago, the district’s nutrition program began offering specific schools locally sourced menu options, including fruits and vegetables, and removed syrup from the breakfast menu.

The three schools participated in the HealthierUS School Challenge, an award program established by the USDA to commend schools who emphasize nutrition and physical activity. The school volunteered and succeeded in earning the “silver states” award. To put this in perspective, less than two out of 100 school in the nation earn a gold or silver award.

An excited Kelly said,

We are so proud of the work we have achieved. We are going to continue this endeavor. We want to fight childhood obesity, and we’re going to do this through our nutrition program and also through expanding our formalized physical education.

Where your children go to school is important. These three Upland elementary schools demonstrated how simple changes could prove beneficial to all involved.
