Are You Considering Filing For Divorce?

While it may not be immediately relevant to you today, it could still be somewhat comforting to know that you are far from alone in this process.

United States Divorce Rates

Ever since their peak in the 1970’s and 1980’s, divorce rates have been falling across most age groups in the United States. According to data collected on divorce rates in this country, only about 65 percent of marriages – excluding marriages where one or both spouses passed away – in the 70’s and 80’s ended up lasting through their 15th wedding anniversary, while about 70 percent of people married in the 90’s made it through their 15th wedding anniversary. While it’s still too early to have a comprehensive read on marriages from the 00’s, current trends suggest the number will continue to rise.

It’s important to note that six states – California, Minnesota, Louisiana, Indiana, Hawaii, and Georgia – do not report their divorce statistics due to budgetary constraints. The other 44 states plus the District of Columbia report their divorce rates, including annulments, to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). It’s also important to note that while the number of divorces may increase from one year to the next, the population in the United States increased from 233,550,143 to 256,483,624 over the 15 years’ worth of data available to the public which means that the rate of divorce may still decrease.\
